My brother-in-law arrived from Spain today and I couldn't contain my excitement. Ruben and I spent hours preparing for his arrival, amidst a hectic workday.  Walking through the airport in a Quiza brother sandwich, I couldn't help but think about how much I enjoy spending time with the opposite sex. Maybe because my husband is my best friend.  Or my dad is my favorite person to observe. 

Maybe it's the way they don't seem to mind if you poke fun at their choice of words. Or the way they look when they are trying to find a nice way to say that regardless of how "in" your shoes are, they're hideous. Either way, I couldn't imagine how life would be without them. Some would say less complicated. I would say, well, painfully boring. What would you say?

The Most Interesting Man

Initially, when I was asked to work with Kane, a hip-hop artist, I had an idea of filming him in these quiet and reflective moments at sunrise. However, after we embarked in an hour long discussion at coffee I noticed a few things. Finding a time when he wasn't laughing or sharing his incredibly accurate insight about the difference between a Tom Ford or Ralph Lauren Purple Label suite, would be very difficult. Especially to force a stoic, expressionless glare in the camera purely for filming purposes.

So, what do you think? Are you intrigued? Did he live up to the title? I am always a bit biased towards my subjects, but I definitely want to learn more about this gentleman.

The Valiant Life

I recently had the glorious opportunity to work with Caleb Condit who shot me on one of the happiest days of my life, Dani Rashin, and the lovely Leslie Bembinster on Ashley Scott's latest lookbook for her up coming collection. 

I take you behind the scenes, and then give you a near brain spasm in the videos found below. Needless to say, I am so excited  for this collection (she is indeed making me a somthin' somthin').

Madison the Muse

It is rare that you find someone with as much heart and charisma as my five-year-old niece, Madison. In addition to being able to entertain everyone around her, ask a dozen questions in less than a minute, and count to 40 in spanish, she also plays the violin. 

I have just recently become part of the I Wear Red Lipstick (almost) Everyday Club, and Madison caught me mid-application and begged me to put some on her. On the way to church. As an alternative I promised we would have a fun dress up photo shoot and as usual, she owned it. Gosh I wish she was a few years older, or I younger. We would sooooooo be best friends.

Representing for Midwest Style

I was thrilled to be asked to share my spring style secrets with Refinery 29. Aside from the fact that I never really thought my style had any secrets to it, I was so happy to be apart of a feature that showed that Midwest girls had any style at all.

 The emergence of street style blogs have really provided a platform for real and unique style across the globe. Individuals from places such as Antwerp, Bangkok, and Brisbane have made their mark in the fashion industry without having to leave their own neighborhoods. 

Considering that at one time fashion was once a luxury only to be obtained by the affluent, and the "outsiders" were left to daydream whilst flipping through the glossy pages of Vouge and Elle. However, after being captured by a street style blogger (the wonderful Emma Arnold of Tres Awesome)my look was published in Elle for all the world to see. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that could be possible. 

It is an exciting thought to know that is industry is becoming not only just more unified, but more realistic. People all across the globe are learning to not mimic what we see in magazines, but to be inspired by each other by just the click of a mouse. I guess we can really say that this really is the fashion of the future. And to think all this time I was waiting to start dressing like a Jetson.... 

A Collection Preview: Drapes by Ashley Scott

Working with Ashley is always so effortless. She makes beautiful things with her hands, and I am instantly inspired when she gives me a peek on all the upcoming collections. We shot this on the first of these insanely beautiful days we've been having. With a bit of our natural chemistry and a little help from the mechanic who was watching over our shoulder (he pointed out the grain in the cement and how it complimented the metal.... I know, right?) we're able to give you a first look of her upcoming collection.

Meanwhile in Zagreb pt II

I't wouldn't be fair to keep mentioning how talented my husband is because one would say that I am biased. However, when your professional colleagues start to take note and want to learn more about his unique abilities, I feel as though my notion has been confirmed.

Jacque

About a week ago, I was doing a bit of thrifting with my mom. It truly is one of our favorite pastimes. However, we usually show up 15 minutes before closing time and it kinda drives the cashier crazy. Just as we were checking out, I came across this beautiful broach. I fell in love with the painting of this man (I call him Jacque) walking in Paris over the Seine. I thought it was so cool how Jacque was elevated off the piece, creating a three dimensional affect. 

From the back, Jacque seems to be pretty dapper with his bowler hat and all. I'd like to imagine that he was en route to meet a lady friend for an evening stroll, but that is just the romantic in me. Where do you think Jacque was headed? 

Big Mouth

I recently went to bed after re-reviewing my favorite S/S '12 collections on Style.com. It was definitely the reason for my  technicolor dreams of Mary Katrantzou. The following morning I woke up to the new release of Santigold's Big Mouth. Coincidence? I think not.

Meanwhile in Zagreb Pt I

I think one of the most memorable moments during these past adventures was our journey from La Coruña to Zagreb. What should normally be a flight long enough to nap or flip through a few pages of Vouge Español, became an eighteen-hour voyage. 

We arrived in Zagreb in the wee hours of the morning tired, cranky, and in desperate need of bubble bath. However, I was stoked because I would be meeting up with my friend and client, as she was coming from a fashion show hosted by J-Wind in Bucharest. I scribbled a quick email with my hotel room number and something about bear-hugging her when we finally met up, and passed out. 

The next morning, well afternoon, I picked up a ringing phone to hear my friend's voice blurt out her room number. I bounced out of bed so quickly, my husband thought I must have forgotten my passport on the plane or something. I waltzed down the hall of the 5-star hotel as if I weren't wearing my pajamas, and banged the door of room 418. 

When the door opened we shrieked in delight, commenced the catching-up period, and exchanged tales of our adventures over the past month. Between the two of us we had bounced between 7 countries in just a few weeks. We were able to meet up in Zagreb because she was presenting her collection alongside designers such as Kunitar and 8E88, in a fashion show at the opening of the Creative Dimension Zagreb inspired by Toyota.

Check out some of the footage I captured. The show was a success and a huge shout out to our friends at J-Wind for making it all come together. Hip Hip! Hooooray!

Venice

This past few months have been filled with foggy airports, gondolas, opera houses, cathedrals, and islands. More tales of my adventures to come shortly, but in the meantime I will leave you with some of my favorite shots I captured while in one of the most beautiful cities I've ever visited....

Not like this hasn't happened before

It has been a over a month since I have posted, and it might be just as long before I post again. I wanted to leave you with an image that I found that was so fly. I don't want you to think that I have just been sitting and twirling my  fingers. I have been getting my hands dirty with many a different project.

Beginning with a trip to New York in July. Then, with intentions of gathering some great Fashion Week coverage, back to twirl around NY in September. And believe me, I twirled. You would have seen the evidence had my camera cooperated and transfered the images to my computer. I got over it quickly because the following week I would be flying to London, where it all began ;).  


Fighting jet lag we made our way to the island Solta, in Croatia. After a few days there conducting research, we  boated across the Adriatic Sea to Italy (I will post pictures of Venice. It was magical). Finally, after skipping down to Madrid, I am floating around the Northern part of Spain where I am currently typing whilst looking out at the sea. 

I am dizzy with excitement, and eager to take full advantage of these opportunities in front of me. Whether it's exploring the world of opera and meeting with costume designers, or arranging for artists to exhibit across the globe. The prospects are many, but with no time to spare.


I'm just happy for this pause in the day to check in and post a picture of my new (and very imaginary) friends.
